Which scholars are surging ahead on the Danish social web?

In an age of populism and science denial, I feel that scientists that garner attention to themselves and their work should be celebrated.

If they only had the chance! These Danish scientists would have aced it on the TwiLi Index. Do you recognize them? See who they are at the bottom of this article.

This was why I started releasing my annual TwiLiIndex four years ago, partly in reaction to the Kardashian Index, that made fun of scientists by measuring the discrepancy between scholars’ social media following and their citations.

My own index started in Denmark, and this year I have extended it to Norway and Sweden, so there are three separate indices to compare and evaluate.

The scientists who rank on the index for their high social media followings are all respected scientists in their own right. The way I see it, there is nothing, nothing to be ashamed of. Nothing to hide.

So here it is! Here below are the top 100 scientists in Denmark in 2022.

Please take it in a positive spirit! The index takes a lot out of me, but it is also rewarding, and I will keep on releasing these indices every year until the last person says ‘good job and keep up the good work!’

It is called the TwiLi Index (=Twitter/LinkedIn index) – and you say it like you would say ‘twilight’ without the ‘t’. It ranks academic scholars affiliated to research institutions based on their Twitter and LinkedIn following. Twitter and LinkedIn are the platforms most used by researchers and scientists in a professional sense, as they allow networking and interaction within highly specialized fields.

Since 2019, the TwiLi Index has been reviewed in several publications. Some point to its usefulness as one of many measures of researcher success that supplement bibliometric scores, citations, and educational activities.

My TwiLi Index is based on a TwiLi score. Below you will see two separate measures of scientists’ impact, centrality and pagerank on Twitter (see explanation below). To do this I partnered up with my good friend, the data scientist Lasse Hjorth Madsen, who developed a bespoke web app for Mike Young Academy to organise publicly available data extracted using the Twitter API.

Centrality and pagerank are not integrated into the scientists’ TwiLi. So for the TwiLi index that is listed below, the top 100 scientists are ranked only on their TwiLi score. Each of the top 100 scientists then have their centrality and pagerank ranks — among nearly 4,000+ scientists on Twitter in the Nordic countries — listed after their name.

Centrality

Centrality evaluates scientists as hubs for flows of information on Twitter. A scientist has ‘centrality’ if they are the shortest path between other scientists in a network. Scientists score high on centrality if they are the shortest path many times. Centrality in this case has been calculated based on a network of more than 4,000+ scientists on Twitter in the Nordic region, so if you have a centrality rank of 23 in the table below, you are the 23rd highest centrality scoring scientist among the 4,000+ scientists. If you are a scientist with a network that is outside these countries, you may score and rank lower on centrality.

Pagerank

Pagerank evaluates scientists as attractors of influential followers. It is an indirect, proxy measure of scientists’ impact based on their followers’ follower numbers on Twitter. A scientist has a high Twitter-pagerank if the people who follow them have many followers. So getting followed by another scientist who has a high following on Twitter improves your own pagerank. However, getting followed by, say, a media Twitter account with many followers will also increase a scientists’ pagerank. So pagerank tends to favour ‘celebrity’ scientists known for other things like politics, or established scientists in fields that are in the public eye.

As can be seen when you browse down the names on the index (below) it is an ‘index for Denmark’ but not a ‘Danish’ index. International scholars are well represented in the top 100.

Who is storming ahead on social in the land of IKEA, Spotify and Carl von Linné?

A few years back, it was trendy to make fun of scientists for having large followings on social media.

The Kardashian Index ridiculed researchers by measuring the discrepancy between their social media following and their citations. It was hilarious at the time — and still is! — eight long, and social-media-savvy, years later.

These Swedish scientists would have aced it on social media if they had the chance. You do not recognize them? See who they are at the bottom of this article.

But most people understand that, everything else equal, having a large social media following as a scientist cannot be something bad.

A high number of followers simply shows that a large number of people are interested in what you have to say. As a scientist in an age of populism and science scepticism, this, surely, is a good thing.

This is why I started releasing my annual TwiLiIndex four years ago. It started in Denmark, and this year I have extended it to Norway and Sweden. The scientists who rank on the index for their high social media followings are all respected scientists in their own right. Nothing to be ashamed of. Nothing to hide.

So this is it! Toot toot! Here below are the top 100 scientists in Sweden in 2022.

I love this index, but it takes a lot out of me, so please take it in a positive spirit.

You can read about the methodology of it here.

It is called the TwiLi Index (=Twitter/LinkedIn index) – and you say it like you would say ‘twilight’ without the ‘t’. It ranks academic scholars affiliated to research institutions based on their Twitter and LinkedIn following. Twitter and LinkedIn are the platforms most used by researchers and scientists in a professional sense, as they allow networking and interaction within highly specialized fields.

Since 2019, the TwiLi Index has been reviewed in several publications. Some point to its usefulness as one of many measures of researcher success that supplement bibliometric scores, citations, and educational activities.

My TwiLi Index is based on a TwiLi score. Below you will see two separate measures of scientists’ impact, centrality and pagerank on Twitter (see explanation below). To do this I partnered up with data scientist Lasse Hjorth Madsen, who developed a bespoke web app for Mike Young Academy to organise publicly available data extracted using the Twitter API.

Centrality and pagerank are not integrated into the scientists’ TwiLi. So for the TwiLi index that is listed below, the top 100 scientists are ranked only on their TwiLi score. Each of the top 100 scientists then have their centrality and pagerank ranks — among nearly 4,000+ scientists on Twitter in the Nordic countries — listed after their name.

Centrality

Centrality evaluates scientists as hubs for flows of information on Twitter. A scientist has ‘centrality’ if they are the shortest path between other scientists in a network. Scientists score high on centrality if they are the shortest path many times. Centrality in this case has been calculated based on a network of more than 4,000+ scientists on Twitter in the Nordic region, so if you have a centrality rank of 23 in the table below, you are the 23rd highest centrality scoring scientist among the 4,000+ scientists. If you are a scientist with a network that is outside these countries, you may score and rank lower on centrality.

Pagerank

Pagerank evaluates scientists as attractors of influential followers. It is an indirect, proxy measure of scientists’ impact based on their followers’ follower numbers on Twitter. A scientist has a high Twitter-pagerank if the people who follow them have many followers. So getting followed by another scientist who has a high following on Twitter improves your own pagerank. However, getting followed by media and journalist Twitter accounts with many followers will also increase a scientists’ pagerank. So pagerank may favour ‘celebrity’ scientists known for other things like politics, or established scientists in fields that are in the public eye.

As can be seen when you browse down the names on the index (below) it is an ‘index for Sweden’ but not a ‘Swedish’ index. International scholars are well represented in the top 100. I interviewed Ashok Swain, one of the very top scientists on social media in Sweden, here.

Who are the scientists on the picture at the top of the page? From the top, Anders Celsius, physicist, Eva Ekeblad, agronomist and Carl von Linné, botanist.

Who are the scientists with the biggest social media impact in Norway?

Scientists and researchers are constantly being assessed and evaluated for their ‘impact’. The h-index , for example, measures the productivity and citation impact of a scholar.

The h-index, however, does not measure other forms of academic impact like teaching and outreach activities, and it tends to favour scholars in the natural sciences. Researchers also have a wider impact on society than what can be measured through article citations like in the h-index: They teach younger researchers, engage in public debate and influence policymakers and other experts in their field.

These historical Norwegian scientists would have had a large social media impact if they had only had the chance! Their names are at the bottom of the index below.

A further measure of impact is how good scientists are at networking with their peers in other universities and with the general public: Here a social media ‘impact’ of a researcher may be more interesting.

My own TwiLi Index offers a measure of this type of wider impact, and I now release a set of data for scientists and research in Norway. I have already released an index for Denmark/the Copenhagen region every summer since 2019, and you can read about the methodology of it here. Upcoming releases include Sweden and Denmark (2022 version soon) with Finland planned to go live in 2023.

The TwiLi Index – or the ‘Twitter-LinkedIn’ index, and pronounced like the English word ‘twilight’ without the ‘t’ at the end  – ranks academic scholars affiliated to research institutions based on their Twitter and LinkedIn following. Twitter and LinkedIn are the platforms of choice for most researchers and scientists globally, as they allow networking and interaction within highly specialized fields.

Since 2019, the TwiLi Index has been reviewed in several publications. Some point to its usefulness as one of many measures of researcher success that supplement bibliometric scores, citations, and educational activities.

An alternative measure of scientific impact for scholars in the Land of the Midnight Sun

In addition to the index, which is calculated purely based on Twitter and Linkedin follower numbers, I release two separate measures of scientist impact, centrality and pagerank on Twitter (see explanation below). This has been developed in partnership with data scientist Lasse Hjorth Madsen, who developed a bespoke web app for Mike Young Academy that organizes publicly available data extracted using the Twitter API.

Centrality and pagerank are not integrated into the scientists’ TwiLi score. So the top 100 scientists are ranked only on their TwiLi score for the TwiLi index that is listed below. Each of the top 100 scientists then have their centrality and pagerank rankings — among more than 4,000 scientists on Twitter in Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Norway — listed after their name.

Centrality

Centrality evaluates scientists as hubs for flows of information on Twitter. A scientist has ‘centrality’ if they are the shortest path between other scientists in a network. Scientists score high on centrality if they are the shortest path many times. Centrality in this case has been calculated based on a network of more than 4,000 scientists on Twitter in the Nordic countries, so if you have a centrality rank of 23 in the table below, you are the 23rd highest centrality scoring scientist among the 4,000+ scientists. Centrality is one measure of impact, but it does tend to overestimate local, rather than international scientists. If you are an international scientist that has just arrived in one of the Nordic countries with a network that is mostly abroad, you may rank lower on centrality on this measure.

Pagerank

Pagerank evaluates scientists as attractors of influential followers. It is an indirect, proxy measure of scientists’ impact based on their followers’ follower numbers on Twitter. A scientist has a high Twitter-pagerank if the people who follow them have many followers. So getting followed by another scientist who has a high following on Twitter improves your own pagerank. However, getting followed by, say, media and journalist Twitter accounts with many followers will also increase a scientists’ pagerank. So pagerank may favour ‘celebrity’ scientists known for other things like politics, or established scientists in fields that are in the public eye.

As can be seen when you browse down the names on the index (below) it is an ‘index for Norway’ but not a ‘Norwegian’ index. International scholars are, as in all my country indexes, well represented in the top 100. I interviewed Glen Peters, a top scholar on the list, about his Twitter routine here.

If you are a part of the Nordic science and research community, the ranking (see below) can serve as inspiration for new contacts. After all, these scientists clearly know what they are doing in terms of social media, so why not follow them? (You will thereby indirectly increase their TwiLi score for next year’s ranking, but hey! why not!)

Who are the scientists on the picture at the top of the page? Thor Heyerdahl, ethnographer, Ellen Gleditsch, chemist and Jens Rathke, zoologist.

Who are the wizards of the Danish scientist web?

For good or for worse, scientists and researchers are assessed and evaluated by their ‘impact’. The h-index , for example, measures the productivity and citation impact of a scholar: but this does not take things like teaching activity and outreach activities into account.

These Danish scientists had, guaranteed, absolutely no social media following whatsoever.

And what about scholars’ wider impact? How good are they at networking with their peers and with the general public? Here a social media ‘impact’ of a researcher may be more interesting.

My own TwiLi Index offers a measure of it and you can read about the methodology of it here.

The TwiLi Index – the ‘Twitter-LinkedIn’ index, and pronounced like ‘twilight’ without the ‘t’ at the end, get it? – ranks academic scholars affiliated to research institutions based on their Twitter and LinkedIn following. Twitter and LinkedIn are the platforms of choice for most researchers and scientists globally, as they allow networking and interaction within highly specialized fields.

It is the third year running that I use the formula to calculate scientists’ TwiLi score based on their Twitter and LinkedIn follower numbers. The 2020 rank for Denmark is here. In 2019 and 2020 I did a separate index the Greater Copenhagen/Øresund area using the same methodology.

Since 2019, the TwiLi Index has been reviewed in several publications. Some point to its usefulness as one of many measures of researcher success that supplement bibliometric scores, citations, and educational activities.

This time, I add two extra and separate measures of scientists’ impact, centrality and pagerank on Twitter (see explanation below). To do this I partnered up with data scientist Lasse Hjorth Madsen, who developed a bespoke web app for Mike Young Academy to organise publicly available data extracted using the Twitter API. Centrality and pagerank are not integrated into the scientists’ TwiLi score. So the top 100 scientists are ranked only on their TwiLi score for the TwiLi index that is listed below. Each of the top 100 scientists then have their centrality and pagerank ranks — among nearly 3,000 scientists on Twitter in Denmark — listed after their name.

Centrality

Centrality evaluates scientists as hubs for flows of information on Twitter. A scientist has ‘centrality’ if they are the shortest path between other scientists in a network. Scientists score high on centrality if they are the shortest path many times. Centrality in this case has been calculated based on a network of more than 3,000 scientists on Twitter in Denmark, so if you have a centrality rank of 23 in the table below, you are the 23rd highest centrality scoring scientist among the 3,000+ scientists. If you are a scientist with a network that is mostly abroad, you may score and rank lower on centrality in Denmark.

Pagerank

Pagerank evaluates scientists as attractors of influential followers. It is an indirect, proxy measure of scientists’ impact based on their followers’ follower numbers on Twitter. A scientist has a high Twitter-pagerank if  if the people who follow them have many followers. So getting followed by another scientist who has a high following on Twitter improves your own pagerank. However, getting followed by media and journalist Twitter accounts with many followers will also increase a scientists’ pagerank. So pagerank may favour ‘celebrity’ scientists known for other things like politics, or established scientists in fields that are in the public eye.

As can be seen when you browse down the names on the index (below) it is an ‘index for Denmark’ but not necessarily a ‘Danish’ index. International scholars are well represented in the top 100.
