But researchers and science communicators need to do many other things on Twitter than just scrolling down the newsfeed, retweeting, and tweeting.<\/p>\n<p>So I have decided to list some of the best free tools and third-party services based on my own experience in science communication and the feedback I get from the scientists who attend my <a href=\"http:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/social-media-for-researchers\/\">workshops.<\/a> These apps ensure that you get all the networking gains from being active on Twitter, without being distracted and losing focus on the job at hand.<\/p>\n<p>[This is a blog post version of a Tweetorial, which <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MkeYoung\/status\/1313356541056122880\">can be seen here.<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>I am going to start off with <em>social media management platforms<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Social media management platforms allow you to monitor your research field on several accounts and platforms at a time, and to schedule posts. They are a big time saver, and let you off the social media hook during periods of deep work. The platforms work for me because they let me \u2018forget\u2019 my tweets after posting, and I am therefore not tempted to go back and see how a certain tweet is performing after I posted it! It does what it should do: Monitors search terms, lists, and hashtags, and lets you schedule posts on multiple accounts so you can easily cross-post one update on another platform. Unfortunately the free version only allows you to schedule five tweets, which takes away some of its usefullness.<\/p>\n<p>For research labs, section and official department accounts Hootsuite is the thing, as it also works well at scale for multiple posters on one main account if you are using the paid version. Hootsuite is a big platform, however, and the downside of this is lagginess. Use the desktop version of Hootsuite.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #008080;\">Buffer<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=org.buffer.android\">Buffer<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=org.buffer.android\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4043 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Buffer1-495x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"216\" height=\"384\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Buffer1-169x300.jpg 169w, https:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Buffer1-579x1030.jpg 579w, https:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Buffer1-768x1365.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Buffer1-864x1536.jpg 864w, https:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Buffer1-844x1500.jpg 844w, https:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Buffer1-397x705.jpg 397w, https:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Buffer1.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 216px) 100vw, 216px\" \/><\/a>, another SoMe management platform, is easy and straightforward, especially on your phone app. Like Hootsuite you can use it for LinkedIn, Facebook, etc. If I see a tweet that I would like to retweet later, I can swipe it and \u2018buffer&#8217; it.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #008080;\">Tweetdeck<\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_4051\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4051\" class=\"wp-image-4051\" src=\"http:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Tweetdeck-495x400.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"151\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Tweetdeck-300x151.png 300w, https:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Tweetdeck-1030x520.png 1030w, https:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Tweetdeck-768x388.png 768w, https:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Tweetdeck-1536x775.png 1536w, https:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Tweetdeck-1500x757.png 1500w, https:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Tweetdeck-705x356.png 705w, https:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Tweetdeck.png 1759w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4051\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tweetdeck is the simplest social media management platform if you only use Twitter, and not other social media platforms.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>If you only use Twitter, and from your desktop, you might as well just use Twitter\u2019s own management platform Tweetdeck however. You are already logged on with your Twitter, and it is speedier than getting in and out of other platforms. The interface is iconic for social media management, is by far the best in terms of keyword and hashtag surveillance, and it allows you to do nifty things like only see tweets with specific phrases from specific tweeters.<\/p>\n<p>Now on to some third-party add-ons that do specific things to make Twitter more effective.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #008080;\">Tweepi<\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_4058\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4058\" class=\"wp-image-4058\" src=\"http:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Tweepi-495x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Tweepi-300x206.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Tweepi.jpg 679w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4058\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tweepi<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I have been on Twitter for a long time, and this means that over the years I follow thousands of people on multiple accounts. But people move on, and many of the accounts are now dormant, or are used for something else.<\/p>\n<p>Tweepi\u00a0 to the rescue! It allows you to segment followers on location, when they last tweeted, etc. You then just unfollow the people who are no longer active. If you need to quickly follow a defined group of people, then Tweepi makes it easier too.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #008080;\">Tweepsmap<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4060\" src=\"http:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Tweepsmap-495x400.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"154\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Tweepsmap-300x154.png 300w, https:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Tweepsmap-1030x529.png 1030w, https:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Tweepsmap-768x394.png 768w, https:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Tweepsmap-705x362.png 705w, https:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Tweepsmap.png 1359w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>How do you find the right people to follow? There are several add-ons out there that allow you to search for specific terms in people\u2019s bio descriptions. Most are good, but you also have to pay up. <a href=\"https:\/\/tweepsmap.com\/\">Tweepsmap<\/a> has a no-frills keyword search and follow function that is free.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #008080;\">Tweetbeaver<\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_4062\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4062\" class=\"wp-image-4062\" src=\"http:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Tweetbeaver-495x400.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"184\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Tweetbeaver-300x184.png 300w, https:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Tweetbeaver-1030x630.png 1030w, https:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Tweetbeaver-768x470.png 768w, https:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Tweetbeaver-705x431.png 705w, https:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Tweetbeaver.png 1417w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4062\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tweetbeaver<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Everything seems to be called Twee- something doesn\u2019t it? Very confusing.<\/p>\n<p>Tweetbeaver has functions that are handy if for some reason you need to export your own, or someone else\u2019s, list of followers, friends or do anything else that involves extracting stuff into a CSV file.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #008080;\">TwitterListManager<\/span><\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_4218\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4218\" class=\"wp-image-4218\" src=\"http:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/TwitterListManager-495x400.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"387\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/TwitterListManager-233x300.png 233w, https:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/TwitterListManager-768x990.png 768w, https:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/TwitterListManager-547x705.png 547w, https:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/TwitterListManager.png 783w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4218\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">TwitterListManager makes it a lot easier to manage your lists<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I am a big fan of Twitter&#8217;s own native &#8216;list&#8217; functionality. Lists help you organise your Twitter newsfeed, stay focussed, and only see the tweets that are relevant for a specific networking task.\u00a0 The trouble is, once you have added the people you follow to different lists, it is a hassle to reassign them, or take them off again.\u00a0 You can do it natively on the Twitter platform, but it takes lots of clicks and time.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitterlistmanager.com\/edit.html\">TwitterListManager<\/a> to the rescue. It is a no-frills desktop application that does the job. \u00a0There are a few apps out there that say they can help you manage lists. But this is the only one I know that does the job properly. It is easy to work with, and its free!<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #008080;\">IFTTT<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Finally <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.ifttt.ifttt\">IFTTT<\/a>, or \u2018If This Then That\u2019. It&#8217;s an app that belongs to what I would call \u2018automated social response\u2019 or doing SoMe duty while you concentrate on editing and experimenting. It works by creating chains of conditional statements, called applets.<\/p>\n<p>So you could have an applet that sends you a notification every time someone tweeted something with a specific hashtag. Or send a thankyou message after they follow you.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4076\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4076\" class=\"wp-image-4076\" src=\"http:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/IFTTT-1-495x400.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"154\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/IFTTT-1-300x154.png 300w, https:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/IFTTT-1-1030x529.png 1030w, https:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/IFTTT-1-768x395.png 768w, https:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/IFTTT-1-705x362.png 705w, https:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/IFTTT-1.png 1459w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4076\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">IFTTT is a way to automate actions on social platforms<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The possibilities are endless on IFTTT if everything is interconnected: How about having your home\u2019s lights flashing on and off when someone tweets about your research?<\/p>\n<p>But for scientist users, one application would be to get IFTTT to add a user to one of your Twitter lists (like a list of people for a conference) on a specific research area if they tweeted using a specific scientific phrase.<\/p>\n<p>So that\u2019s it!
