The post can then reach a wider network if your followers or connections \u2018like\u2019 it or share your post on their own feed.<\/p>\n<p>When you post in a <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/groups\/\">LinkedIn Group<\/a>,<\/em> by contrast, you only interact with people who share your common interest. This makes it easier for users, and employers, to find someone who has the right profile without them having to know each other already. While many LinkedIn Groups end up been negatively affected by spam and promotions, smaller groups can remain highly effective if they are well moderated.<\/p>\n<p>Charlotte Holme-Nielsen \u2013 a veterinarian who is doing her PhD in the field of neuroscience \u2013 calls herself an amateur on LinkedIn.\u00a0But when she spoke up at a social media workshop for scientists that I held at the <a href=\"https:\/\/ivh.ku.dk\/english\">Department for Veterinary and Animal Science<\/a> in Copenhagen recently, I realized that her use of LinkedIn\u2019s Groups puts her right up there among the LinkedIn pros!<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cYesterday I got a private message from someone else from the US who saw one of my comments in another group. \u2018We have this conference. Would you like to participate?\u2019&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>So I talked to her after the workshop to go into more detail about how she uses the platform to network with other experts (and future employers) in a narrow research field.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn LinkedIn I am a member of several groups,\u201d Charlotte told me. \u201cAnd I think this one was a \u2018Veterinarians for Small Animals\u2019 group. Someone posted a picture of a dog with hair loss, and asked the group if there was someone who could help with the diagnosis. So I wrote her a suggestion. She then uploaded more images in the comment thread, and it ended up being a long thread of comments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA short time after this, I received a private message from a recruiter on LinkedIn, who had been hired by a company to find good veterinarians. She wrote to me that my specialization would be relevant to them,\u201d Charlotte explained.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3350\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3350\" class=\"wp-image-3350\" src=\"http:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_5515-495x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"490\" height=\"637\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_5515-231x300.jpg 231w, https:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_5515-768x999.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_5515-792x1030.jpg 792w, https:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_5515-542x705.jpg 542w, https:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_5515-450x585.jpg 450w, https:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_5515.jpg 984w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 490px) 100vw, 490px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3350\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Charlotte Holme Nielsen is in the process of finishing her PhD at the University of Copenhagen within the fields of neuroscience and brain development.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>And this was not all. The opportunities kept coming to Charlotte as a result of her LinkedIn Group activity:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYesterday I got a private message from someone else from the US who saw one of my comments in another group. \u2018We have this conference. Would you like to participate?\u2019 In this way, the LinkedIn Groups are a way for me to get into contact with potential employers and fellow vet scientists in the same area,\u201d says Charlotte, who adds that she now has forged connections to several scientists in the UK that she otherwise would not have met.<\/p>\n<p>There is nothing remarkable about Charlotte\u2019s activity on LinkedIn, and you can see her<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/charlotte-holme-nielsen-713b37a5\/\"> LinkedIn profile here.<\/a>\u00a0 But she has, at the time of writing, only posted a \u2018regular\u2019 post (to all her connections) <em>once<\/em>. Let that sink in for a moment to all of us who post regularly to all our connections: She has only posted to all her connections, once.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Not quite qualified &#8211; <\/strong><strong>and proud of it<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nearly all her activity is through the LinkedIn\u2019s Groups function (See how to find it below)<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3377\" style=\"width: 505px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3377\" class=\"wp-image-3377\" src=\"http:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Groups-495x146.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"495\" height=\"146\" data-wp-editing=\"1\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3377\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Click on the search field, then select &#8216;groups&#8217; on the right. Find a LinkedIn Group in your interest area, and &#8216;request to join&#8217;.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This might change, she admits. She is about to hand in her PhD thesis. And she does &#8216;like&#8217; other people\u2019s posts that show up in her regular newsfeed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you like something, the person who posts at least gets to know you exist,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;&#8230; you should put yourself in their shoes. No-one is ever going to think: \u2018She is so annoying. And how embarrassing it is for her that she is not qualified!&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>More subtle is Charlotte\u2019s strategy towards people who post about new jobs in her area. Both the ones that show up in her newsfeed and in the LinkedIn Groups that she is a part of.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy former Novo manager posted a job ad on LinkedIn that was slightly outside my field. I wrote him a direct message and said, \u2018Hey, I am not qualified for this job, but if you know of any others within my own field, then please let me know\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>This takes a bit of courage, I imagine. You are reacting to job offers that you are not completely qualified for?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell. Maybe. But you should put yourself in their shoes. No-one is ever going to think: \u2018She is so annoying. And how embarrassing it is for her that she is not qualified!\u2019\u201d, Charlotte laughs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe point is. If you are posting about a new vacancy on the platform, there is a high chance you are an employer that is generally hiring new people. So this is why I think the method works very well,\u201d Charlotte says.<\/p>\n<p>At the Mike Young Academy<a href=\"http:\/\/mikeyoungacademy.dk\/social-media-for-researchers\/\"> social media for scientists workshops<\/a> one of the elements is how to use search strings on LinkedIn\u2019s powerful search engine, and how to bookmark them in order to use them for daily routines.<\/p>\n<p><em>Charlotte, tell me, are you going to bookmark a search string on all new jobs in your field from now on and use your strategy with all of the job offers that you are not-quite-qualified for from now on?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI might just do that!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Does your department, faculty or university need to boost the international impact and career of your researchers?
